I keep thinking how much more powerful the Spiderman origin story would be if Peter Parker was an African American kid, whose Uncle Ben was shot by police while being arrested for a minor parking infraction. There is no formal investigation, and Peter decides to put himself on the line to prevent it happening again. He tackles the white crimes that go unpunished, punishes POC criminals fairly. He is the leveler, always fighting to be without bias, to be just. To protect people like his uncle.
This not only mirrors so much of what’s happening in America, but feeds right into the complex relationship between Spiderman, the authorities and the media.
Peter Parker is a brilliant student, awkward, a nerd, but is branded a thug, a gang member, a criminal, because of his appearance. The media latch on to that and misrepresent him totally.
The police, humilitated by the fact that he refuses to work with them and often punishes cops themselves for brutalizing innocent people, or guilty people who still deserve better treatment than they get, attempt to hunt him down.

I was thrilled to pieces when I saw this scene. Disney could have written Gideon off like some bully character who never really amounted to anything, or got what was coming to him like a lot of those characters do in their movies. Gideon made something of himself. He’s a pastry chef, something that’s not traditionally a job for men in media. And as soon as Judy speaks to him, he immediately apologizes to her. He doesn’t try to shrug it off as no big deal, or say that it was just boys being boys or whatever; he knows he hurt her, and he owns up to it. And Judy immediately forgives him.
Well done, Disney.
Also the language that he used is not something that he would have most likely grown up hearing/using. Describing his failings as self-doubt that manifested into “unchecked rage and aggression” sounds SO MUCH like therapy speak. So he’s either gotten counseling to help him with some of his problems, or sought out literature to help himself. A++ disney :)

Seriously??? He hurt her so badly that she has a compulsive fear of his entire species, plus other symptoms of PTSD (impulsiveness, intense need to be seen as productive/effective, trouble sleeping in new environment, paranoia). She was forced into contact with him without even asking her, in a situation where she had to fear her parents would take his side over hers, especially since she was already having self-esteem and trust issues. He falls back on the cultural myth that childhood is somehow drastically distinct from adulthood, wording his apology in such a way that if she doesn’t accept that he’s a ‘new person’ now, then she’s the jerk. If he really cared, then he would immediately remove himself from her environment after apologizing, even if she accepted it, and not place himself in her presence again without her (not her parents’) explicit invitation.
All making him a baker does is reinforce the cultural notion that feminine things are non-threatening, an idea that only has salience because we treat femininity and feminine people as weak and fragile.

Not only is this bitter beyond belief, it’s almost completely inaccurate. Judy was not traumatized into fearing the entire species of foxes. She explicitly told her fox racist parents that Gideon was just one fox who happened to be a jerk and she didn’t hold that against the entire species. She does has some residual inner prejudice against foxes but that’s to be expected when you’ve been raised to distrust them your entire life. She quickly overcame that prejudice and had compassion on what she thought was Nick and his child.

PLUS Judy accepted his apology with respect and empathy. She didn’t shame him, didn’t go “yeah that’s right!” or anything like that. She listened to his apology, saw he was sincere and accepted it.

I was writing /to the people who are in the social justice movement/, from a standpoint of “if you are doing this thing because you enjoy mocking men, it is having effects you would not want”. Something I’ve noticed: when kids on this site try to explain “nonbinary”, they always end up basically arriving at “androgynous”.
It’s something I’ve seen a lot (and for other tumblr genders too). They always end up talking about gendered stereotypes, personality, or providing a cute little illustration of someone wearing a dress one day and a hoodie the next.

‘Conflict of interest’ for trustee to plead his son’s case
A private university in Iowa violated state law and its own rules by firing a trustee for defending his disabled son against a kangaroo-court investigation, according to a federal lawsuit filed by the father last month.
Tom Rossley, who served 23 years on Drake University’s board before his July dismissal, accused the school of failing to accommodate his son’s “ADHD, anxiety, and language-based learning disabilities” in the sexual-assault investigation.
Drake also refused to investigate the son’s claims that the female student who accused him had initiated the sex when he was incapacitated, as alleged in a December lawsuit filed on the son’s behalf.
Dubbed a “first-of-its-kind Title IX retaliation case” by Rossley’s lawyer, who is also representing the son, the lawsuit claims Drake violated its trustee’s First Amendment rights after Rossley continued to argue internally that Drake had discriminated against his son.
He was ‘not able to give consent that night’
Drake pursued an investigation against the son after a female student filed a sexual-assault complaint against him in October 2015. He was expelled four months later.
According to the son’s pseudonymous lawsuit, the two had engaged in oral sex and possibly intercourse. He gave a different account of the evening’s events, alleging that both were heavily intoxicated but the female initiated oral sex on him.
While it’s not clear how far things escalated that night, the son’s suit claims he was “not in a state to be with her” and “not able to give consent that night.” The accuser conceded “on the record” during a later Title IX hearing that she initiated sex without his consent, according to the father’s suit.
Despite the dueling claims, only the son was subject to an investigation. Drake termed his own allegations against the female “retaliatory.”
‘Comfort rooms’ for accuser’s family, nothing for Rossleys
During the course of the investigation and despite several pleas from Rossley, his son was denied accommodations for his disabilities, which include “word retrieval” impairments, the suit claims.
In a nine-hour hearing, Drake “forced” the son “to be his own advocate and act as his own legal representative … despite knowing full well” about his language disability, it says.
The university kept Rossley out of his son’s hearing, and gave him and his wife “fewer accommodations while simultaneously offering comfort rooms” for the female student’s family.
Following a handful of Rossley’s emailed complaints to the university, alleging the investigation violated his son’s due process and Title IX, the father was told to be quiet and his fellow trustees told to avoid “discussion of the issues” that he had raised.
‘Silenced and covered up’ a whistleblower
Five days after being asked not to speak on the subject, Rossley agreed not to publicly speak about the Title IX investigation, according to the lawsuit.
But the board chair still asked him to resign, and by June the entire board started trying to remove Rossley for “conflict of interest,” but kept failing to reach the two-thirds majority vote required for removal. He was finally removed July 19.
The trustees violated state regulations in removing Rossley, failing to give him 15 days’ written notice of termination and five days’ notice to address the board “orally, or in writing,” the suit claims.
Rossley lawyer Andrew Miltenberg, who has represented dozens of male college students found responsible for sexual misconduct, said Drake “effectively silenced and covered up” the father’s complaints about his son’s treatment while failing to remedy its own “numerous lawless actions.”
Officials “purposefully ignored and failed to investigate” the disabled student’s “numerous pleas for help after he was sexually assaulted by a female student,” simply because he was male, Miltenberg said in the press release.
Title IX hast to have become the biggest joke in academics. It started out so great with getting women’s athletic departments on equal footing with the men’s and it has descended into what basically amounts to a giant roadblock for any male that happens to step out of line where a woman is concerned.
It’s a disgrace and a shame to what it was formed and started to be and it needs to be gotten rid of or at the very least overhauled in the name of real equality that it once stood for.

The female claimed he raped her. He retaliated against her like a typical abuser. She was also too intoxicated to consent. How do you know he is not lying about the events? How do you know she didn’t perform oral sex on him due to his verbally coercing her?
